Build a first leveling system that rewards the behaviour you value.

Your first configuration should be easy to explain. Atom lets you expand later; it is more useful to launch a legible progression path than to turn on every available reward immediately.

Text XP uses the configured server range, with role-specific ranges taking precedence for the member’s highest configured role.
Voice XP has its own XP range, interval, participant requirement, and eligibility controls.
Atom stores XP cumulatively and derives the member level from the selected formula.

Choose a primary contribution signal

For most new servers, begin with text XP in the channels where useful conversation happens. Add voice XP when real voice participation matters to the community. Keep reaction XP off until you can name the specific reaction behaviour you want to recognize.

Give the first milestones a job

A reward role can signal belonging, unlock an appropriate channel, or recognize a contribution. Use names people can understand at a glance. A long list of near-identical roles teaches members to optimize a counter rather than participate.
